Pakistan Commissions Next-Generation Hangor-Class Submarine into Naval Service
Pakistan has officially marked a major milestone in its naval modernization drive with the commissioning of its next-generation Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M HANGOR, into the Pakistan Navy.
This induction represents a decisive step toward enhancing Pakistan’s maritime deterrence, stealth warfare capability, and strategic balance in the region.
The Hangor-class submarine program consists of eight advanced diesel-electric submarines, developed in collaboration with China. The program is structured to not only strengthen naval capability but also boost indigenous shipbuilding:
4 submarines to be constructed in China
4 submarines to be built locally at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works
The design is based on the Chinese Type 039B Yuan-class submarine, widely regarded as one of the most advanced conventional submarines in operation today.
At its core, the Hangor-class is a diesel-electric submarine equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP), a technology that significantly enhances underwater endurance.
Air Independent Propulsion (AIP)
Enables the submarine to remain submerged for weeks without surfacing
Minimizes exposure, drastically improving survivability
Stealth & Detection Avoidance
Special anechoic coating absorbs sonar waves
Extremely low acoustic signature
Designed to evade modern anti-submarine warfare systems
This makes PNS/M HANGOR exceptionally difficult to detect and track, giving Pakistan a critical edge in underwater warfare.
The Hangor-class submarine is equipped with a sophisticated weapons suite:
Heavyweight torpedoes for anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare
Anti-ship cruise missiles
Submarine-Launched Cruise Missiles (SLCMs)
This includes potential deployment of systems such as the Babur-3 cruise missile, enabling a sea-based nuclear deterrent.
Nuclear Second-Strike Capability
The most significant strategic impact lies in its ability to provide nuclear second-strike capability—ensuring that even if land-based assets are compromised, Pakistan retains the ability to respond from concealed underwater platforms.
Combat Systems & Operational Excellence
The submarine integrates a modern Chinese-developed combat management system, enabling:
Real-time battlefield awareness
Seamless weapons integration
Network-centric operations
Additionally, it features:
Active sonar for detection and engagement
Passive sonar for silent tracking and surveillance
This dual-sonar capability enhances both offensive and defensive operations in contested maritime environments.
Strategic Implications for the Region
The induction of PNS/M HANGOR significantly strengthens Pakistan’s position in the Arabian Sea and beyond:
Enhances sea denial capability
Counters regional naval expansion
Reinforces credible minimum deterrence doctrine
It also marks Pakistan’s transition toward a more modern, stealth-oriented naval force capable of operating effectively in high-threat environments.
The commissioning of PNS/M HANGOR is not just the addition of a submarine, it is the beginning of a new era for Pakistan’s undersea warfare capability.
As more submarines from the Hangor-class program are inducted in the coming years, Pakistan is set to establish a formidable and survivable maritime deterrent, ensuring stability and strategic balance in the region.
